FINALS TEAMS DECIDED FOR NEXT WEEK and UP AND COMING EVENTS

August 19, 2017

It has been a long season (certainly the longest I have been involved in) and the teams for next week’s finals have been decided.

In Division 1 the top 4 teams are still in contention.

SEMI FINAL 1  -  1st placed Lions (Jerrod Thomson + Steve Keating) v 4th placed Tigers  (Seng Joo Keng + Patrick Keating)

SEMI FINAL 2  -  2nd  placed Cheetahs ((Luke Thomson + Mike Rogers) v 3rd placed Cougars (Martin Tribe + Charlie Murong)

The grand final will feature the winners of the two semi finals.

Results during the season suggest anything could happen and that the doubles result will most likely determine the winning team. Patrick Keating has not played a lot of table tennis of late, coming back from a few seasons off and then missing a number of weeks due to illness in the present season. Martin Tribe, who has been a past club champion is just starting to show some of this old form. His team, the Cougars, were well down the list towards the start of the season and have made their way up the rankings. Some good wins by Charlie Murong have also helped.

In Division 2 there will be a straight grand final between minor premiers, The Bad Seeds, and  Midnight Oil who have been by far the two standout teams all season.  The Bad Seeds consist of Dale Parkes, David Harkins and Ian Cerny. But Ian Cerny has had to move to North Queensland over the last few weeks and will miss the final. I believe that Brendan Cole will be his replacement. Brendan is a very keen table tennis player and is capable of a big upset.

Midnight Oil consist of Nathan Thomas, John Dale and Joel Carpenter. A very strong team but John Dale has been trying to shrug a bout of illness.

Should be a very interesting clash.
