CLOSED CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE A GREAT SUCCESS

Thanks to the tireless efforts of committee members, Heather Dunlevie, Ken Hay and Martin Tribe, as well as assistance from Desley Payne, the 2017 Sunshine Coast Closed Table Tennis Championships went off like clock-work over the last 2 Tuesday nights.

The coveted A Grade Singles Championship went to the naturally gifted Adam Wood. In the semi finals Adam beat the quickly improving Colin Noh while the very experienced Peng Yu had a surprisingly easy win over last year’s winner, Seng Joo Keng. Joo, like a number of other players in the tournament, had trouble with Peng’s crafty use of bat rubbers.

However, in the final, Adam had no difficulty at all and breezed to a popular win.

In other major results:-

  • Adam Wood backed up his singles win by partnering long term top Noosa player and now international jet setting, Bill Brown, to win the A Grade Doubles Title against husband and wife team, Jan and Peng Yu.

  • Jan Yu defeated top junior Jayde Treloar in the Ladies Singles.

  • Jayde showed her class by overcoming Dan Ettel in the Under 18 Singles.

  • Dan got some consolation by getting the better of Nathan Thomas in the B grade singles.

  • Arguably the smartest player in the club, Alan Bruhn, was too good for Gerrit Fialla in the Men’s Veteran Singles.

  • Linda Yap caused a major upset and gave us a glimpse of her fantastic potential by beating Jan Yu in the Ladies Veteran’s Singles.

  • Linda then teamed up with the dependable Russell Treloar to get a close 5 set win over Judy Chin and Liam Reeve in the B Grade Doubles Final.

  • And in the popular Committee Doubles, the cunning pairing of Ian Oakley and John Bongertman did not let Colin Rule and Gary Kiorgaard “get a show in” in the final.
