Sunshine Coast plunders States at Mackay - report by Ken Hay

Five Sunshine Coast players - Judy Chin, Linda Yap (Over 40 Women’s Team ) , Alan Bruhn, Ken Hay (Over 70 Men’s Team ) and Jerrod Thomson who played with Moreton Bay Club as there were insufficient nominations in his age group from our Sunshine Coast Club, all travelled to Mackay to contest the 2018 Queensland Veterans Table Tennis Championships.

The main aim in playing in these Championships is to get selection to play for Queensland in the Australian Championships which will be held in Bendigo, Victoria in October this year. If you don’t play in the Queensland Veterans you don’t get selected.

All our players were selected to represent Queensland except Judy who elected not to make herself available.

Ken Hay selected in over 75 Mens A Team and captain.

Alan Bruhn selected in over 70 Mens B Team and captain.

Linda Yap selected in over 50 Womens A Team.

Jerrod Thomson selected in over 40 Mens A Team.

The Sunshine Coast Team of Alan Bruhn and Ken Hay were the only team medal winners for the Sunshine Coast getting Bronze ( 3rd Place ) out of a field of 10 teams and improved their seeding by one place.

Linda and Judy retained their seeding which was an exceptional effort considering Judy at times was competing against players some 20 years her junior.

Apart from the Teams Events, medals were won in the individual events.

Overall it was a good result for the Sunshine Coast. Full results can be seen on Table Tennis Queensland Web Site.

The players wish to thank the Sunshine coast T.T.C. for its support in providing team shirts and paying team entry fees.

Sunshine Coast Club players over 30 should be encouraged to enter future Queensland Veteran Championships and represent our club. Next year the Championships will possibly be held at Brisbane or the Gold Coast.
