MUCH AWAITED NEW SEASON STARTS WITH THREE DIVISIONS FOR FIRST TIME, A BRAND NEW FLOOR SURFACE, AND S

After a month long break while the floor was resurfaced, table tennis resumed at Maroochydore this week with 3 divisions for the first time.

Mind you, such is the improvement in standard of the club, the new division 3 looks very much like the B grade of old.

There are also 5 new players – 6 if you include Brian Pearson who is back after many years away.

Div 1 – Brian Pearson

Brian is a talented young player coming back to table tennis after playing in his teens. He did not win any matches on the first night but showed his potential taking a couple of games and winning both his doubles.

Div 2 Jin Jang

Jin is South Korean born and a very attacking player. In his first night he won 4 from 4 beating Colin Rule, Martyn Clarke, Judy Zhang and Joel Carpenter.

Judy Zhang

Judy is coming back to table tennis. She struggled a bit on her first night but has the shots and should improve.

Jonas Campbell

Jonas plays in Noosa and won 3 of his 4 singles on the first night. He beat Simon Lu and Colin Rule (both in 5 sets) and Martyn Clarke in 4 sets. His only loss was to Mike Rogers.

Simon Lu

Simon has been playing on a Thursday for a while. He is an attacking pen grip holder and won 3 of his 4 matches (beating Gordon Holden, David Harkins and John Ettel and only losing 10-12 in the 5th against Jonas Campbell)

Div 3 Sharon Matherson

Sharon has also been a regular Thursday night player. She won one of her 4 singles but showed her potential in taking a game each off Denis Orr, Brian Cavanagh and Greg Williams.

Having so many new players is a bonus for the club and should make it an interesting season particularly in Division 2. It is especially good to see two new female players to add to our ranks. And while our club boasts some of the best masters players in the state, it is exciting to see some new younger players showing potential.

I have attached the draws and teams for the new 2019 Winter season on the web site. Click “HOME” on the home page and “Current Season Info” comes up. Click this icon. Also on the “Current Season Info” page you will find a detailed Word document showing availability of the Maroochydore Stadium on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays throughout 2019.
