GRAND FINAL EXCITEMENT WITH PHOTOS
There may have been some walkovers in the semis but it was nail-biting stuff on Tuesday night in the grand finals. (2019 Spring Season)
In Div 1 it was the minor premiers, Black Widows (Adam Wood, Bill Brown replacing Roger Gore who is still overseas, and Martyn Clarke) up against the Funnel Webs (Jerrod Thomson, Mark Bagshawe and Jonas Campbell).
After 8 matches, it was 4 all and a show down in the final match of the night was on the cards between no 1’s, Adam Wood and Jerrod Thomson. But a thrilling but close win (13-11 in the 4th) to Jonas Campbell and a surprisingly easy win to Mark Bagshawe over Bill Brown gave the premiership to the Funnel Webs 6-4. And the last match did not need to be played.
Bill Brown is a seasoned player who has featured in our Club Championships over the years, winning in 2008. So Mark’s 11-6, 11-5, 11-9 win over Bill was not expected, certainly not the ease of it.
On the subject of Mark Bagshawe, his matches are exciting to watch with unbelievable returns that go on and on.
Incidentally, I don’t think anyone would begrudge Mark a premiership. The last 3 seasons his team has made the grand final only to go down.
Spring 2018 – Mark Bagshawe + Dan Ettel (Pandanuses) lost to Jerrod Thomson + Danny Yeung (Eucalypts)
Summer 2019 – Mark Bageshawe (Boodies) + Michael Wilson lost to Adam Wood + Gerrit Fialla (Potoroos)
Winter 2019 - Mark Bageshawe + Martin Tribe (Marvelmen) lost to Dan Ettel + Michael Wilson (Defenders)
The division 2 final was played in a very gentlemanly fashion. Sirloins (David Harkins, Steve Rowson, Rick Perry) jumped the gun and won the 1st 3 matches. Blades (Gordon Falkingham, Jim Kyle, Stephen Park replacing John Dale) woke up to win the next 3 matches. 3 ALL. Sirloins applied the accelerator to win the next 2 matches and only having to win one of the last 3 matches to win the premiership. But the Blades had other ideas and Stephen Park and Jim Kyle won their matches. 5 ALL. And when captain Gordon Falkingham thrashed David Harkins 11-2 11-6 in the first 2 games, the comeback seemed complete. But somehow David found his way back. He is a smart cookie and he discovered a serve that Gordon could not handle and with a bit of luck and a lot of grit he managed to win 15-13 in the 5th. 6-5 to the SIRLOINS. Gordon definitely had his chances with 3 premiership points in the final game.
All players in the final played above and beyond but a special mention to David. After 4 rounds of the comp, he was on top of the rankings with 12 from 12. But, after an accident at home to his leg, he was out for 2 weeks. Then, playing in pain, he only won 1 out of 3 matches for 3 out of the next 4 weeks. So his efforts in the final to win 3 out of 3 singles matches was inspiring.
