IAN OAKLEY

Started playing social table tennis aged 10 years in Warrnambool , Victoria – moved to Wonthaggi and played “B” grade competition in 1954 – moved back to Warrnambool and played “B” grade until 1956 and then played “A” grade competition in 1957, I spent several years on the Committee there, including Secretary, and received Life Membership in 1977.

I received the Premier Town Sporting award in 1982 and enjoyed being included in the building of a new table tennis stadium in 1966. An amazing amount of work done by the whole club.

I started playing with The Sunshine Coast Table Tennis Club in Nambour in 1986 at Nambour PYC and after a short time moved to Nambour State School. Then to Nambour High School, and then to the Sunshine Coast University at Sippy Downs, then to the sports centre art Meridan Plains and finally on to Maroochydore State High School, where the club is being run very successfully and professionally and looks certain to have a great future.

In 2012 I received the Queensland table tennis Gold Volunteer award. With 64 years in “A” grade I have enjoyed countless team events, tournaments, intertown matches, championships, country week tournaments and state and national veteran championships, with some wins and quite a few losses.

The best part was the great social interaction and also the fact I played in many doubles and team events with my brother Ron and son Glenn and mixed doubles with my wife Kathy, and also many years of social practice with the club members at home and at the club.

Thank you table tennis
