2021 Closed Championships Report and photos of winners updated

The Jubilee Stadium was a hive of action on last Saturday for the SUNSHINE COAST TABLE TENNIS CLUB 21st CLOSED TABLE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP. Highlight of this year was the healthy number of junior entries. This is a reflection of the strong Junior Program in our club with plenty of work from Patrick Wuertz, Jayde Treloar, Dan Ettel, Paul Kwaczinski and Joel Carpenter. I believe that Patrick is getting together a squad of juniors to continue the good work onto the Sunshine Coast Open on September 25 + 26. If you wish to join this squad, please let us know.

In the A Singles the semis were fought out between Jerod Thomson and Patrick Wuertz and between Jim Kenworthy and Adam Wood. As he has done all season, Jerod kept Patrick honest, but could not manufacture an upset. In the other semi, Jim Kenworthy won the first 2 games but appeared to tire and Adam came home.

Adam was in the form of his life and took the first game in the final, but Patrick was too strong and won the next 3 games to win his 3rd successive title. This equals Martin Tribe record of 3 wins (2002, 2004, 2005) but is still behind Paul Green’s achievement of 4 wins (2009, 2010, 2011, 2013). I thought Paul was going to be an entry this year as he was a willing helper on Friday night setting up but not so.

The Women’s Open Event was run as a round robin with Jenny Wyatt , Sharon Matherson, Jayde Treloar and Linda Yap the able field of contenders. I am sure Judy Chin would have loved to be there also but she is nursing an injured shoulder. Linda Yap prevailed with Jayde the runner-up.

Another highlight of the day was the cheerful brigade of players who came down from Coolum under the guidance of Faye Cox. They impressed us with their skills to take home a swag of medals in the Social Singles and Doubles but, even more so impressed us with their fun-loving attitude and friendliness.

Thanks to the hard working brigade that made the event possible. They were led by Desley Payne and Craig Cowan and included Colin Rule, Jim Kyle, Eric Frangenheim, Brian and Heather Dunlevie, Christine Rule, Heather Gillespie, John Bongertman and Julia Seo.
